Hux glanced at Ren from the corner of his eye at the question, his mind wandering to his last encounter with Snoke and the order he gave him. Find Kylo Ren and bring him there. He didn't really tell him much else and Hux didn't care, since Force talk was usually just between him and Ren anyway.

"He said that it was time for you to complete your training." He could only guess what that meant, but Hux figured that he was going to grow even stronger afterward. The Supreme Leader still had plans for Ren, but he wasn't sure what Snoke was going to do to him for his failure at Starkiller base. While he didn't seem too angry before, Hux knew that his life was still not in the clear.

If the Supreme Leader was going to kill him, he'd just have to face it with some level of dignity. Maybe ask for a second chance without looking too pathetic. Better not think about it for now, though.

"Nothing else was mentioned to me." His tone was neutral, none of his own worries visible in his voice.

He hadn't expected Leader Snoke to mention any details to the man, but still, he'd had some hope that he'd give something more than just that. Had Ren disappointed him, and that was why he needed further training? Or was it because he'd proven himself, shown that he was ready for it? It was true that he managed to kill Han Solo, followed through on the test the Supreme Leader had given him, but the light inside him was not destroyed by that act.

Ren took in a sudden breath at the thought, trembling for the briefest of moments almost imperceptibly as his jaw tensed and his fists clenched. But well-aware of being in the presence of others who he could not show weakness to, he stilled himself quickly, staring into the fire with a gaze as intense as the flames reflected in his eyes.

He had to focus. Unlike Hux, he was only so capable of masking his feelings without his actual physical mask, which was largely why he wore it. If he focused on the pain—he only remembered what caused it, the girl and the traitor and the wookiee and involuntarily his mind brought forward memories of when he was a boy, sitting on brown furry shoulders. Of the man who taught his son everything he knew about flying, telling stories of remote regions he visited during his smuggling days. The man who said We miss you moments before Ren pushed him off the walkway to plummet into the shaft below.

His breathing became almost ragged, and his chest felt as if it was about to burst. He didn't know if he could stand it much longer.

Although it was subtle, Hux still noticed the slight tremble from Ren, who was sitting only a few feet away from him. That and the fact that his fists were clenched were obvious signs that the Knight was having some sort of existential crisis or something among those lines. He didn't know and he wouldn't care on a regular day, but Hux really didn't want to deal with a Ren that was about throw a tantrum.

For a moment, the general thought that he was able to calm down on his own. There were no other reactions from Ren for a few seconds. But no, guess that would be too easy. He watched as Ren's breathing became uneven and how his face changed into something that was definitely not calm.

Hux really didn't want him to have a fit when they just tried so hard to keep morale up. All that effort to not get mad at Ren would go to waste. He resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose and just looked at him with a serious, but not really mocking expression. It was truly a miracle.

"Ren."

The only apparent response to Hux addressing him was Ren closing his mouth, no longer baring his teeth at whatever inner thoughts he was having. He did not turn his gaze towards the red-haired man nor make any sounds, as it was taking all of the energy he had to stop himself from turning his turmoil and rage upon his allies.

If the general truly had something important to say, he might be able to restrain himself, but if not—he had to leave.

It was usually so simple calming down people around him. The stormtroopers, the other officers, they instantly obeyed him when he gave out it order. If he told them to withhold their anger, they would do so without question. But Ren wasn't one of his soldiers, wasn't part of the military at all. He operated under the First Order, but all of his orders were from Snoke himself.

Kylo Ren didn't have to listen to Hux and it frustrated him to no end. Made his perfectly disciplined and ordered world just a bit more chaotic and the general hated it.

But he was going to at least try and get Ren to listen to him. "I was under the impression that you'd be eager to continue your training with the Supreme Leader. Your anger is surprising-- this time, at least."

His training—

Hux was right. His training... that was the important point here. He couldn't let himself get distracted by unnecessary, irrelevant things, feelings that shouldn't exist. If he just ignored them, thought about how much more powerful he would become with Snoke's guidance... yes, it would be fine. He let out a breath through his mouth, a small amount of the tension in his shoulders disappearing. Ren's eyes didn't turn to the general, but they darted about as he thought about the idea.

"I—am," he replied, and it was true, at least on the conscious level. "That isn't the issue. I was simply—preoccupied with how we came to be in this place."

The events of the past week, he was implying without necessarily having to go into detail. If Hux could just continue to distract him, it was possible he'd actually be able to get himself to a relatively calm level. For the time being.

Hux highly doubted that was the reason for Ren's loss of composure. But he didn't care enough to dig deeper or demand the truth, not when he was apparently successful in calming him down. He was honestly a little surprised that he managed to do that, but he wasn't going to second guess it either. He wasn't really the type to, anyway.

"The Resistance isn't completely foolish, not after they saw our might destroy the Hosnian system. They're not wasting time in attempting to locate our remaining fleet, aiming to destroy us before we get the chance to recuperate." If Ren wanted to talk about how they came to this planet and the events leading up to it, then that was fine with Hux. ~~Gave him more reason to hear his own voice and rant about the people that he hated.~~ He'd rather talk about strategies and their next course of action than Ren's anger problems any day.

"Our infrastructure and technology is superior, but our numbers are far lower, even with the destruction of the Republic's fleet. Those that cherish the weakness of the Republic, the loyalists, will surely come to their side after the capital's destruction. Both sides have been greatly weakened by the last battle and now it's a rush to crush those that remain." They still had ships and more weapons in the Unknown Regions, but the base's loss was heavy and couldn't be ignored. Hux just needed to utilize what they had before the Resistance could get any further.

A discussion of tactics? It wasn't Ren's forte, but he'd indulge the general for now. It was a good enough distraction.

"They'll be caught up in red tape for a while as they try elect new officials and discuss what's to be done," he replied. "Even if they are fully united by the loss of Hosnian Prime, there will be arguments over how to proceed. The First Order will have no such issue, even if our return is delayed."

It was almost funny how stupid the New Republic and their Senate was. That they refused to listen to General Organa, when it was her hand that essentially rebuilt the government from scratch. He'd always hated politicians, even before he was able to put a reason to it. A single, strong leader was the reason the First Order had been able to grow the way it had. There was no argument to get in the way.

"Their weakness other than their indecision was their lack of knowledge, and I've no doubt that will continue to be the case. They've no charts of the Unknown Regions, no idea of our numbers, our weapons, or where our troops are stationed. They've been made aware of it now, but it will take time before they can remedy that weakness."

He knew Leader Snoke would be able to see the situation for what it was and take decisive action. Starkiller Base was an immense power, but it was one weapon. They had other resources.

Well, this was turning out to be better than he expected. Not only was he not angry anymore, but Ren was actually talking tactics with him. Hux wasn't so arrogant that he'd refused to listen to others, so he heard him out before responding.

"The fact that they're so easily thrown into chaos shows how weak the New Republic really is. They aren't disciplined or ready to rule this galaxy and it's because of their inaction that the First Order was able to grow this powerful in the first place." An angry, almost bitter tone finally reached into his voice, showing how he felt about the war he was fighting against them.

"However, resistance pilots are still out there and we are on this planet without any means to escape yet. We will do well to keep that in mind and not make any foolish mistake." The First Order will continue, even if Hux didn't make it back, but he highly preferred to be part of it rather than just wasting away on this planet. Everyone in the First Order should feel that way, honestly.

"And we must not forget that the traitor most likely leaked information to them as well." If Hux ever saw FN-2187 again... "We will defeat the Resistance, but overconfidence will serve no purpose for us right now."

The two of them making it back to the Supreme Leader's side went without saying. The Dark Jedi wouldn't allow anything to get in the way of that, no matter what they encountered here or on the way, regardless of his injuries.

"They won't get much more out of FN-2187," replied Ren, gloved hand gingerly brushing hair out of the burn on his face. "I doubt he's in any state to talk after the injuries I inflicted."

If nothing else, he was satisfied with that part of the battle. To think a stormtrooper would dare to strike him... he'd shown the young man his place, and if he ever woke up he would be sure to remember it. Meanwhile, Ren's arm would heal. It had only been a shallow cut.

Hux turned his full attention to him at the comment. He wasn't fully aware of the damage that Ren did to him, but hearing that he gravely injured FN-2187 was definitely pleasing. It a was real shame that he went rogue, Hux heard from Phasma that he was an excellent fighter and surely would've been a good soldier for the First Order. But that possibility couldn't happen, it was too much of a risk to keep him alive.

"How gravely did you injure him?" Hux never got the full report of what happened there, other than the fact that the Scavenger girl managed to defeat Ren in battle. Oh, and Han Solo died, which was definitely a big loss for Resistance. General Organa was probably still mourning him, but that also meant she was most likely going to redouble her efforts in getting rid of the First Order. She was one of the few people on the Republic that Hux did not want to take lightly.

"Far more than I was injured," he replied. "A slash the length of his back, and a deeper one to his shoulder."

Hux had seen the extent of his injuries, seen how he'd been limping from only a lightsaber's graze. He would be able to understand how severe injuries even worse than his would be to a man who wasn't nearly as tolerant of pain (nor Force-sensitive) as Ren was.

Keeping the other details to himself was deliberate; there was only so much he was willing to relay about the sequence of events on his end, as ultimately they weren't that important to the First Order's military. The death of Han Solo, the defeat of FN 2187, his injuries at the hands of the Resistance—these were the only things the general needed to know. The business of the Jedi was for the Supreme Leader's ears only, as far as he was concerned.

Hux frowned a little at that; he was expecting a wound far more critical than that. While he didn't doubt the power or strength of a lightsaber, it was still far from the confirmation he was hoping for. FN-2187 had escaped death multiple times and somehow came back to ruin several of his plans. He was a cockroach that needed to be squashed and Hux wouldn't be satisfied until he saw him dead with his own two eyes.

FN-2187 was a broken cog in his well-maintained and organized military. It almost felt like he was making a mockery of Hux's training methods and programs just by his mere existence.

He couldn't hide the scorn that crept into his tone. "But there's still a chance that he survived."

The corner of his mouth twitched, lip curling for a brief moment at the other man's tone of voice. The chance that the former trooper would survive was slim but it existed nonetheless. He'd been a little too preoccupied with other matters to consider finishing off an insignificant irritation important.

"Unfortunately," he replied tersely. "But it will be enough to give us more time. We'll crush the Resistance before he ever has the chance to recover and share any other information."

Ren wouldn't allow something so stupid to get in their way. His voice took on the higher note he used when mocking or questioning Hux, reflecting the failure right back onto the general.

"Though I suppose that depends largely on how well your troops perform. Hopefully none of the others will see fit to follow in his footsteps."

Hux didn't like it, but there wasn't much they could do about the traitor now. He grudgingly agreed with Ren that they just needed to wipe out the Resistance before FN-2187 did any more damage by leaking First Order information and secrets. While all of this could've been prevented if Ren just killed him off to begin with, there was no point in bringing that up.

Ren was effective in getting under Hux's skin, anger crossing his expression at both the tone and his words. How dare he question his men, his training methods. It wasn't the first time the Knight had done this, but Hux really didn't want to hear it from him right now.

"I've taken great measures to ensure that other soldiers don't follow the traitor's footsteps." Mostly through more simulations and speeches and reconditioning if even the slight deviation was shown. FN-2187 not only escaped and joined the Resistance, but his actions were like a virus that Hux needed to stamp out before it spread to anyone else in his military. Luckily, Phasma was more than willing to promote loyalty and retrain troops for the First Order.

"I don't need you questioning my ability to control the First Order's military."

"I don't want you questioning my abilities either," he all but hissed in response, a threat barely hidden behind his words. He hadn't missed the look on Hux's face when the troopers helped him aboard the shuttle. It was impossible that the thought hadn't crossed the general's mind—especially with the red streak across Ren's face that doubtless invited it.

"But if we're going to put an end to these sorts of mistakes in the future we're going to have to. I will be returning to my training under the Supreme Leader—I suggest you reexamine your methods as well."

Although he loathed to admit it, Hux knew that Ren had a point in his comments. Yes, he upped the training that the stormtroopers were going through, but that wasn't a 100% guarantee for fixing the problem. They tried that before with FN-2187 and he still ended up betraying them in battle.

Perhaps Phasma was correct about having troops experience some combat that wasn't just simulations. Maybe establish that as some sort of standard, a final test. They didn't have the resources to do that, but Hux would figure something out. He had to. Brendol Hux started these training methods and he would make sure that they were still a standard for the First Order.

"I'm taking full responsibility for FN-2187's betrayal-- just as I expect that you'll take responsibility for letting the girl get to Luke Skywalker." There was definitely some mockery in his voice, a slight sneer on his face as he looked at Kylo.

The girl was probably with the last Jedi by now. She had a connection to the Force and a map to Luke Skywalker. There would be no reason for the Resistance to not use Rey's abilities to their advantage.

His jaw tensed as he looked away, back to the fire. He could not deny that the droid's escape was his fault, even if he could not possibly have foreseen the scavenger girl's resistance to his interrogation attempts. To think he'd been so close to everything he'd been looking forward to—even the original saber of Darth Vader had emerged—just for it to squirm out of his grip. He was livid. At the Resistance, at the girl, at himself.

"I will personally make sure the threat of Skywalker is eliminated," he replied, insistent. He had a reputation to uphold—and he intended his title of Jedi Killer to be absolute. He would destroy the last of the Jedi, and in time the girl would see the truth and come to his side, or else die.

Hux looked at him for a few more moments before returning his gaze to the fire as well. There wasn't much else he could add to that; he didn't doubt that Ren would try his hardest to make sure that Skywalker was a thing of the past. Hux trusted Kylo that much at least-- even though he disliked him on a good day.

His earlier anger and irritation left him, leaving the general in his usual mood: calm. Thinking about their next move, analyzing different scenarios and possibilities and what they could do. It helped him to concentrate, soothe some of the anxiety that he felt. Better than just sitting here and staring up at the sky and being completely unproductive.

If he was at least partially prepared for whatever news that the scouters will bring, then he would at least have some control of the situation.

Hux's silence allowed him to retreat into his thoughts again, but this time he managed to keep the turmoil in his mind from surfacing. He simply sat quietly staring into the fire, meditating on his master's training.

It was two more hours before the troopers returned with the information they'd sought: it would take them a few days to procure transportation, if they wanted to get a ship that couldn't be tracked. Something could be acquired sooner if they wanted to risk being detected, but even Kylo wasn't willing to take it. Not after the loss of Starkiller Base.

Assuming Hux would feel the same about it, he simply returned to his thoughts. They should probably get some rest soon—though Ren wasn't certain he wanted to sleep around the others at all.

The choice was obvious: they would bide their time here until they secured a ship that had a harder time being detected. While there were risks for both decisions, Hux would rather wait out a few days than chance getting blown up by the Resistance again. They might not be so lucky next time. Besides, this was a big planet and they could most likely escape detection for a bit longer.

Honestly, they had a better chance of survival on the ground.

Hux dismissed his men once they were done with their report, satisfied for the time being about the information. Most of his anxiety was gone now and he was starting to feel tired, but he first turned his attention back to Kylo.

"Go to sleep."

Ren's gaze turned to Hux when he spoke, his expression impassive. When he replied, there was a definite pride in the way he lifted his chin, despite the fact that it was, considering his exhaustion, a completely reasonable request.

"I don't follow your orders, General."

The Dark Jedi rose to his feet with some effort, the few hours of rest enough to dull the pain to the point he considered the attempt to stand and walk worth it. As far as he was concerned, he didn't need the heat of the fire, nor any of the guards, nor any of Hux's conversation. The only thing the general and his soldiers were good for right now was acquiring the transportation they needed, and that wasn't going to happen for some time.

Clearly, Ren was so arrogant that he'd rather put his own physical health in danger than listen to him. Hux was sorely tempted to bring back his soldiers just so that he could tell the idiot to go to bed in front of them, but he dismissed the thought. It wasn't worth his time-- it wasn't worth of the time of his soldiers to deal with Kylo when he was being a stubborn fool.

"Very well. When you pass out, make sure you do it in a place where we can easily retrieve you later."

He almost sounded bored, almost uninterested in Ren's stubborn behavior. What was the point of getting mad over his blatant disrespect now? The Dark Jedi was just being so over the top that Hux didn't feel angry. Mild annoyance, yes. But not much more than that.

Ren made a dismissive noise in response as he continued to leave, an acknowledgement that he wouldn't have normally given Hux if they hadn't been stuck in the situation they were in. Perhaps the pain and exhaustion were getting to him.

With the troopers and the general behind him, he trailed silently through the forest for nearly an hour, until the trees blocked out the moons above him, the physical darkness bringing forward darker thoughts. It was, despite their ship's wreckage not so far away, completely silent. The nearest town was a few miles away, and there were no noisy animals nor vagabonds of any sort around.

That meant it was that much easier for Hux and the others to hear the echoes of Ren's screams and the strikes of his saber against the trees.

It lasted for about ten minutes, and the crackle of falling branches and trees sounded a bit after that, but afterwards there was nothing. None of the telltale sounds from his weapon, nothing of his voice, nor anything else from the forest at all. Ren didn't return to the campfire either, and nor would he even as the hours passed. It appeared that someone might need to go fetch him after all—whether that night or the morning after.

Was Kylo trying to attract as much attention as possible?

Hux glowered to himself, his irritation fully coming back as Ren's screams continued to echo through the forest. They were lucky that their ship crashed in a remote location, but that didn't excuse this full blown tantrum. He waved off the somewhat worried questions of the stormtroopers that came up to him; Ren was fine. He was just having another one of his childish fits. At least this time, he wasn't destroying expensive equipment on the Finalizer and making Hux work through more paperwork than he already had.

Even though the yelling only lasted for ten minutes, it felt like hours to Hux. He was very thankful when it finally stopped; the silence felt like a blessing after all that noise. Maybe the idiot finally calmed down after destroying some trees. Destroy things usually made him feel better. So, Hux figured that he was fine now.

Except that Ren wasn't returning. Not even when hours passed by.

Hux frowned, looking back at the forest where Ren disappeared. What in the blazes was he doing out there? Did he get eaten by something? Or maybe he just passed out. If this was any other time, he would've just let him rot in the forest, but he couldn't really leave him out there when Snoke expected Hux to bring Kylo to his current location.

It seemed like it was Ren's goal in life to make Hux's miserable. Sure felt like that sometimes.

The general stood up with a scowl and he waved off the questioning looks from the troopers. He needed them to keep patrolling and covering each other. Besides, Hux wasn't helpless; he had his blaster in case anything went sour. Somehow it was the second time in a week where he had to find Ren's sorry ass and bring him back.

Apparently, being a general of the First Order now included the duty of taking care of an emotionally unstable Force user. Just perfect. Nonetheless, Hux started to make his way into the forest.
