ANGST.

Though his fingers were still curled around the hilt, it was loosely enough that Hux had no problem taking it without disturbing the man's sleep. His attempts to pull Kylo up, however, were a different matter; after his arm was around Hux's shoulders, his brows knit together and he let out a lethargic groan. Up close, it was even more obvious what a mess he was—even aside from the dirt on his face and the leaves and sticks that clung to his hair and robe, the slash on his face had clearly opened in places as well, trails of dried blood stuck to the bridge of his nose and his jaw.

The general was lucky Ren was still drowsy and in a lot of pain, or else it was likely he would have been attacked, even with the saber out of reach. It only took the slowly waking man a few moments to realize what was going on; he'd become familiar enough with Hux's presence over the years to recognize it even without looking.

"Hux," he said, hardly above a mumble, his eyes still closed. His voice was almost scratchy. "What are you doing."

The groan wasn't a surprise, even though Hux wished that Ren would stay asleep during the entire time. Guess he wasn't so lucky. Regardless, he continued to keep moving, since they needed to return back to base as soon as possible. Ren's wounds have reopened and Hux needed to bandage them up before they became worse.

"Taking you back to camp. You passed out by a tree after causing your usual senseless destruction." Hux couldn't help but add that last comment, even if it was completely unnecessary. He was just annoyed by Ren's antics. "Your injuries reopened and thus need to be redressed as well."

Because Ren had to make things even harder for everyone around him. It was what he did. "If you're upset about this, you only have yourself to blame."

The knight let out another grunt of effort as he was forced to his feet, leaning almost his full weight on Hux. The general seemed to be making a few assumptions, he noted sleepily.

"Is there an actual need for me," he replied in that same tired mumble, "or is my absence really so distressing for you."

If he wasn't needed, why was he being moved? His injuries would close by themselves if he was left alone, and being dragged around like this was going to make them worse than they already were. At least he didn't have to open his eyes.

"Y-You were gone for hours." Hux huffed, unable to hold back a slight splutter at the accusation. He was worried for a good reason, okay. Snoke wanted his dumb apprentice and Ren was passed out in the middle of a forest with open wounds. Not only was he open to attack, but he could've froze or caught some sort of illness. All of that would be blamed on Hux, probably.

That was how these things went.

"I've been ordered to bring you to the Supreme Leader. If you suddenly disappeared or died, all the blame will land on me." He didn't need any more blame thank you very much. "And don't tell me that you would've been fine."

Ren finally opened his eyes to look at the man carrying him, regarding him with an expression that was too tired to actually show any emotion.

"I would have returned on my own after getting enough rest," he replied in spite of Hux's demand, "but you decided to take that from me."

The idea of the general attending to him because he was wounded was partly humiliating and partly aggravating. Even if Ren begrudgingly appreciated his help in the escape from Starkiller Base, he was of the mind that Hux needed to mind his own business. (It would be easier to hide his weakness that way.)

Hux didn't really believe him and even if he did, it mattered little. It was too much of a danger to leave Kylo out in the forest and if he wanted to throw a fit about it, then Hux was just going to ignore him. He highly preferred to be able to keep track of the people around him and Ren taking a nap away from the base wasn't beneficial to anyone.

Maybe Ren thought he needed it, but Hux cared little about his personal preference. He never did and it only went double when he was actually responsible for his well-being.

Ugh.

"You'll get your rest back at camp. And don't worry, you aren't so special that everyone is going to watch you sleep."

Somehow he doubted that—and even if he didn't, he hated the idea of any of them watching him sleep, of them being aware of him during a time he was vulnerable. He debated just letting himself drop and watching Hux try to move him until he gave up, but he couldn't be sure of how stubborn the general would be about the issue.

Instead, he took a deep breath before pushing the general away, swaying on his feet but staying upright as he countered his muscles' fatigue with the Force. If he focused on the pain, he could bolster the darkness within him and it would give him further strength. Perhaps his weakness was obvious enough with the way he was shivering from both cold and exhaustion, but he would make his way back on his own two feet, without anyone else's help. He started to take a few slow steps forward.

Hux resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the display, but doing such an act was beneath him. If Ren wanted to walk the rest of the way, fine with him. Meant less blood to wash out of his own uniform later. The main thing was that he found him and both of them were returning back to camp.

"If you wanted to isolate yourself, maybe you should've thought ahead and not completely wreck your surroundings." There was that usual arrogant tone in his voice, almost like he was chiding Ren. If the Knight didn't make a scorching path to his location, it would've been more difficult to locate him.

...Although, it still wouldn't matter to Hux. He still had his tracker on Ren, but he chose not to mention that.

"Don't you have anything better to waste your breath on," Ren groused, his voice low and unsteady. He was still in a great amount of pain, after all, even if he was managing a steady stride without Hux's support—but it wasn't going to stop him from voicing his aggravation at the other man's criticism.

He walked for several more yards before recognizing the lack of a familiar rattle at his side, and he slowed to a stop and turned his eyes towards the general. The only real thing visible in his eyes was focus.

"My saber. Give it to me."

"Since you're the reason why I'm out here in the first place, no." It was obvious that Ren was still in pain from his injuries. If he could irritate him even more with his comments, Hux found no reason why he should hold back. It would make up for some of those times Ren belittled him in front of the other soldiers.

For a moment, Hux thought about outright refusing him. But there was no point for him to keep the saber and it didn't look like Ren was going to use it again anytime soon. Didn't mean that he wasn't going to be an asshole about it.

"Don't you know any proper manners? Perhaps a 'can you please give it to me after causing unnecessary deforestation?'" Nonetheless, he pulled the saber from his coat and held it out to him.

The Knight of Ren vowed to himself to spend less time with Hux alone, if it meant constant comments like these. The sooner they could get back to the rest of the First Order, the better.

Instead of responding to the remark, he merely met Hux's gaze evenly as he reached out to take the saber in his gloved hand, and he let it slip out of the general's hand gradually from the weight of his own arm rather than pulling it away with any force. It was only after he hooked the hilt onto his wide belt that he broke eye contact, and he began to move forward again without a word.

For once, Hux kept to himself as they walked back. He didn't have anything else to add and he was fine with letting the silence hang between them. Long as Ren didn't try to do anything else that was incredibly pointless. Although, it was very tempting to comment about Ren's hobble and how he was slowing Hux down. But he managed his self-control and decided not to worsen the situation between them.

The stormtroopers saluted them as they returned and Hux immediately told them to grab the rest of their medical supplies. He wasn't going to waste time about getting Kylo bandaged after injuring himself again. There were no arguments to be made this time. Hopefully.

"Take off your robe and lie down."

As they continued to walk, the pain became more like steady background than anything pressing, and he had no apparent problems returning to camp. One foot in front of the other, mind empty of feeling, numb to the cold and the strain. Hux's silence thankfully made the process easier.

Ren shot the general a suspicious glance when he ordered the troopers to get the last of the supplies, and his mouth twitched at the order, mild displeasure on his face.

"There's no need to waste supplies on this," he said flatly, meeting Hux's eye.

Hux looked at Ren for a moment with a mildly irritated expression. Alright, guess he had to go down this route. When Hux started to speak, he made sure to speak loud enough for his men to hear him. Good thing he was used to yelling and making speeches. People tended to listen to him when he spoke; it was only Ren that dared to defy him. All the time.

"Your movement was sluggish the entire walk back here. Do you wish to carry yourself in that manner for any longer than necessary? If we're attacked within the next few hours, my men would prefer working with a mostly recovered Knight rather than one still half beaten."

If only it were so easy, Hux. He replied calmly and confidently at the same volume the general had spoken, instead of acquiescing to the general's demand. Kylo was stubborn that way.

He straightened his posture as if to show he was unaffected, though it still hurt quite a bit.

"This isn't enough to impair me against anything the Resistance could throw at us at this point, let alone natives or bandits. I'll be ready for whatever we're required to face."

He wasn't using the usual irritated tone his voice took on when he was arguing with the general, adjusting his words to make it seem more like an amicable discussion rather than a heated argument.

It was exceptionally difficult for the general to bite back all sarcastic retorts. He didn't want to display that kind of behavior in front of his men, even though Ren deserved it. Hux needed to be calm and reasonable, since that was what the bastard in front of him was doing right now. He couldn't be the person that looked irrational right now.

"The Resistance is the group responsible for your current state. When we rescued you from the base, you were bleeding from a bolt from the Wookie's crossbow along with other wounds caused by a lightsaber. And yet, you claim that you'd be able to fight them off again if they track us to our current location? Arrogance will not serve us, Ren."

"Neither of them will be returning for us," he replied plainly, feeling the troopers' eyes on them and trying to keep emotion from his face. He only partially failed; his head angled downward slightly so he was no longer looking down his nose at Hux, and his mouth twitched as he thought about what exactly the scavenger and her friends would be doing instead.

"They're sufficiently distracted by other matters."

"The girl won't be here, but have you just conveniently forgotten that the Resistance are the individuals responsible for shooting us down? That they are the reason why we are in our current situation instead of standing before the Supreme Leader?"

It was highly likely that the girl wouldn't be searching for them; she was probably with Luke Skywalker right now, training to be a Jedi. Which. Was Ren's fault as well. Ignoring that, they were most likely going to be fine, but Hux wasn't willing to risk that small chance of failure either.

"My men are at their best and yet you aren't."

"I don't need to be 'at my best.'"

He was far more powerful, more resilient than a stormtrooper could ever hope to be, and they both knew it, so it was weak as far as a counterargument. Not to mention the fact that battles in a ship were completely different from battles on the ground—and any other day Ren would be glad to continue to argue, but the hour was late, and he felt the sting of his tired eyes and his bleeding side.

After jutting out his jaw for a moment, he slowly and deliberately raised his hands to his belt and unclipped it before shoving the wide piece of leather into Hux's hands. Keeping eye contact with the general, he slipped the outer front part of his vestment over his head and dropped it next to him, and began to undo the clasps of the pleated top underneath. Without the outer garment, the burned tears in his clothing—upper right arm, left shoulder, and left side—were all the more evident, showing the bandages that had been applied before their unfortunate diversion. What was visible of the one on his side was, of course, already covered in red splotches.

That wasn't the point but Hux wasn't going to bother wasting his breath on his reasoning if Ren was finally removing his clothes. He placed the belt on the ground, wanting to make sure that the lightsaber didn't suddenly turn on and stab him in the foot if he just dropped it on the ground. That would be a really stupid way to get himself hurt and Ren's saber was unstable enough to do that. At least, he wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

There seemed to be a sigh of relief among the stormtroopers as one of them walked up to the general and handed him the rest of the supplies. With a nod and a quick gesture of dismissal, Hux ordered the troopers to resume their original duties.

He removed his gloves and looked at the most concerning injury-- the one on Ren's side. "Lie down."

As soon as the Knight of Ren peeled the shirt of sorts off his side, it was all the more evident that blood had soaked through more of the bandages and down past the waist of his pants, but there wasn't even a twitch in his face to show that he was bothered by it. He took a slow breath through his nose that he deliberately made audible, partly to show Hux just how much he was displeased with the idea of following any order from him.

He didn't bother to take off his top any more than that, as the wound was easily accessible without having to get himself out of his sleeves. He refused to look away from the general, however, even as he sat down in their previous spot and moved onto his side, though he kept himself up on his elbow so his head was relatively upright and he could watch what the other man was doing. Now that he thought of it, he wasn't even certain if Hux had rendered much medical assistance in the past several years.

He really didn't take any personal enjoyment out of the fact that Ren was finally listening to him. It was such an annoyance to get to this point that any smug victory was gone. Hux just wanted to bandage him up as quickly as possible so that the insolent man would finally heal. Maybe then he could have some fucking peace.

Hux ignored any sounds Ren made and got to work, taking off the old bandages before he started to use the supplies in the medical kit.

"If you have something to say, keep it to yourself."

Well, now that he'd been given an order, of course he had to ignore it completely. If just to show Hux he wasn't the boss.

"When was the last time you attended to anyone's injuries?"

He made no noises at anything the general was doing to his wound. The main reaction he had to the attention to the rather deep wound was an occasional hardening of his features, though once or twice he did bite the inside of his lip. The bowcaster that hit him had killed weaker men in a single shot; it was mainly through stubbornness that he was even able to stand.

Perhaps Hux should've saw that one coming. In fact, he knew that Ren would react like this, always showing zero respect for him and his abilities. But he had a difficult time keeping some of his more snippy remarks from coming out whenever he was around the other man. If this was someone else, he probably would've done all this with his detached calm, a professional distance.

Ren just brought the worst out of him.

"Years." Hux said without missing a beat, not nervous at all about his answer. He was confident in his ability to patch Ren up, even though he hadn't done this in a while. True enough, he wasn't causing Ren any additional pain and he was getting the injury patched up rather efficiently.

"As I thought. I imagine by the time we obtain a ship this will be the longest you'll have stayed outdoors in a long time, as well."

Beneath the apparent casual discussion was an undertone of mockery, owing to the general's pale complexion and what Ren knew to be his usual schedule. To his knowledge Hux was almost always inside planning or organizing something or another, and the planet they'd transformed into Starkiller Base had been cloudy almost constantly anyway.

However minor, he'd take whatever chance he could get to bring the general down as long as he was reduced to such an embarrassing state himself. It was taking a great amount of restraint not to move to pull the shirt back over himself, mainly from the exposure to eyes rather than exposure to the cold, though the latter was beginning to affect him as well.
